The European Congress on Disinformation and Fact-Checking:
Building a Resilient Information Ecosystem in the EU
20 & 21 November 2023
About the congress
The 1st European Congress on Disinformation and Fact-Checking, co-organized by UC3M MediaLab along with the National University of ‘Kyiv-Mohyla Academy’ and StopFake Ukraine, was financially supported by the European Media and Information Fund, the European University Institute, the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, and Google. This event was part of the broader initiative “Building resilience of Ukrainian fact-checkers in the fight against disinformation about the EU.” Held on November 20-21, 2023, the congress aimed to address the growing challenges of disinformation in Europe, exacerbated by the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine. It brought together a diverse group of experts, scholars, journalists, policymakers, and practitioners to engage in meaningful discussions, share insights, and explore innovative strategies for combating disinformation and enhancing fact-checking practices.
The conference facilitated cross-border dialogue, promoting knowledge exchange and collaboration among participants from 38 countries, representing universities, public organizations, private companies, NGOs, fact-check agencies, and media. Over two days, the event featured 68 speakers and more than 30 presentations, culminating in the publication of an open-access book titled “Disinformation and Fact-Checking in Contemporary Society.” The congress not only highlighted the multifaceted impact of disinformation on the media landscape and democratic societies but also strengthened a network of professionals dedicated to fostering a media ecosystem that upholds transparency, accountability, and democratic values.
